Citizens Advice Portsmouth

Citizens Advice was established on 4 September 1939, shortly after the beginning of World War II. For 85 years, we have supported communities through significant historical moments, offering advice to all who need it. We've addressed issues impacting everyone and used our data to guide decision-makers in improving lives.

Citizens Advice Portsmouth holds a special place in our history as one of the first 10 advice centres set up during this period. This pioneering spirit has driven us to tackle the issues that affect us all, ensuring that our advice and support reach those in need.

By the end of the war in 1945, nearly 1,000 Citizens Advice Bureaux had been established across the country, staffed by 10,000 volunteers. The Times of that year noted, "Nowhere in the world… is there a parallel for this voluntary movement by the people for the people."

Throughout our 85-year history, our charity has been well supported by local people, including many staff, trustees, volunteers, and donors. We are deeply grateful to all those who have helped in any way to ensure that we are here for everyone in Portsmouth with free advice and information.

As a charity dedicated to serving society, we are celebrating our 85th anniversary with a community event here in Portsmouth. This event will not only commemorate our long-standing commitment but also strengthen our community ties. Stay tuned for more details.

We are Citizens Advice.
